Motor Development Lab as a Prepared Environment
Walk into the Motor Development Lab and you’ll notice something that changes on purpose. The space is refreshed each month, not for novelty, but to stay true to Montessori’s prepared environment, inviting children into work that is engaging, purposeful, and built for growth. By rotating materials and activities, students get the repetition they need to practice and master key movements, while also meeting new challenges that keep their curiosity alive and their bodies learning.
Right now, that might look like a child working on a suspended swing, building balance, core strength, and postural control through steady, coordinated movement. Or it might be a vertical hula hoop obstacle course, where students navigate carefully using lower body control, strengthening coordination and body awareness. Over time, these experiences compound: children return to familiar skills in new forms, gaining confidence in their bodies and expanding what they can do, one practiced movement at a time.
It’s a small snapshot of a bigger truth at Alcuin: when the environment is prepared with care, children don’t just grow academically, they grow in confidence, coordination, and independence.
