Each winter, Alcuin's Middle School opens its doors to visiting students who are exploring what it means to learn and grow here. While these visit days are part of the admissions process, what truly shapes the experience is the role current students play in welcoming guests into daily school life.
"Hosting a guest is an important responsibility that helps them feel welcome, safe, informed, and engaged while giving them a real picture of life at Alcuin."
— Ms. Salta, Director of Middle School
Serving as a host means more than walking alongside a guest for the day. Students take on the work of helping visitors feel comfortable and included—introducing them to classmates and teachers, navigating the rhythm of classes, and making space for conversation during breaks and transitions. In doing so, they offer something no schedule or tour can provide: an authentic view of Middle School shaped by student relationships and lived experience.
The response from students was immediate and enthusiastic, with many expressing a willingness to take on this responsibility. That readiness reflects something essential about the Middle School culture at Alcuin. Students understand that belonging is something you actively create for others, and that leadership often shows up in small, thoughtful actions. Whether or not each volunteer ultimately hosts a guest, the spirit behind the response speaks to a community where students see themselves not only as learners, but as ambassadors—confidently shaping the experience of those around them.
