Students See Pulitzer Prize Winning Author

Middle and Upper School students welcomed internationally acclaimed author Ruta Sepetys to campus.
Her latest novel, "Salt to the Sea," is a #1 New York Times bestseller. Her historical fiction books have been published in over 50 countries and 36 languages. Ms. Sepetys’ novels, "Between Shades of Gray" and "Out of the Easy" are also New York Times and international bestsellers. The author’s books have won or been shortlisted for over 40 book prizes, are included on over 20 state reading lists.

Ms. Sepetys shared with the students about how she developed an interest in writing at a young age, and how failure and risk-taking helped fuel her success throughout her career. Prior to publishing her first novel, she spent 20 years in the music industry helping artists and songwriters distill story through song.

She also explained to the students her creative process. Ms. Sepetys told how research played a vital part in discovering more about her Lithuanian heritage and how her family’s history tied into the ill-fated Wilhelm Gustloff, a massive German World War II refugee ship featured in "Salt to the Sea."
