Philosophy

Alcuin School is committed to providing students with a broad and individualized guidance process. At its core, our academic mission is personal; and our counseling follows this philosophy. Our philosophy as an office is simple: encourage students to discover and explore themselves to find their best post-secondary fit. We will assist each student throughout the process, and endeavor to instill confidence in each student’s ability to self-advocate. Our belief is that students are capable of success, and we strive to provide them the opportunity for achievement. This process will be made as transparent as possible, for students and parents. Open and honest communication is essential for success and we understand that college selection is highly individualized. We are here to support the student and the student’s family.

Program

Meetings with students and parents begin once students enter the Upper School and continue throughout the Diploma Programme. As we strive to help each student find the best college fit, we focus on providing each student with hands-on support and direction.  Annual travel to college campuses and membership in professional organizations guarantee our staff maintains excellent working relationships with colleges and universities across the globe. Led by a former admission officer, our staff regularly engages in professional development. The college counselor will meet with students and parents each year of the Upper School to advise and assist students with campus visits and interviews, to participate in the development of each student’s Four Year Plan, to provide insight and support during the application process, and to work with students to utilize our state-of-the-art college counseling software, Naviance, and the International Baccalaureate Organization® (IB) Student Registry. Additionally, Upper School students will attend the annual Texas IB Schools College Fair limited to IB schools, providing an opportunity for IB students to connect with state, national and international universities. During the junior year, students and parents will work with the College Counselor to create each student’s application plan for use throughout the student’s time in the Diploma Programme.

Alcuin Advantage

Alcuin’s Upper School through the International Baccalaureate® Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme continue the student-centered, developmentally appropriate approach to education begun in the Montessori program. This unique combination of world-level educational programs is found in less than ten schools in the world. Independent research demonstrates the statistically higher university acceptance rate and completion rate for students who have completed the IB Diploma Programme. This advantage extends throughout our counseling program. In conjunction with educational travel, Alcuin Upper School provides the opportunity for students to integrate their application process with 21st Century learning through inquiry and independence. The freshman kayaking trip to British Columbia includes the first college visit and will start the counseling program for students. The sophomore trip to London and other parts of England has been designed to further engage student’s conception of university living and their role in the global classroom. During the Diploma Programme, students will travel to a global university to meet other IB students from all around the world to discuss relevant educational topics, while learning about living on a university campus.
