What is the Alcuin Upper School Educational Travel Program?


 
Committed to academic excellence, Alcuin Upper School provides a robust Educational Travel program enabling faculty to uniquely extend the classroom. During the year, all Middle School and Upper School student take Educational Travel trips related to courses of study, particular interests and service.  As an integral part of the curriculum, Educational Travel provided within tuition fees.
 
Middle School students enjoy a number of educational travel experiences to enhance their knowledge of outdoor education, cultural literacy, world geography, and Spanish immersion. In recent years, students have enjoyed backpacking and canoeing in Estes Park Colorado and touring Washington, D.C. to experience our national history. 
 
Upper School freshmen begin Upper School traveling to British Columbia.  Students visit the University of British Columbia and kayak in the coastal waters of Canada.  Working together as a team, students develop self-confidence and experience natural wonders as they kayak from island to island. 
 
 
 
 
Sophomore students experience International Perspectives: England.  This educational travel experience includes unique elements tied to the Alcuin curriculum. Alcuin’s entrepreneurial and internship programs are enhanced when the students spend a morning with the head of a successful start-up company in London. The London Eye provides lessons in geometry and physics. Interviews with members of the Olympic Legacy Team provide insight into urban redevelopment and correlate to case studies developed by the students prior to the trip. Cultural experiences include High Tea in Bath, a tour of Oxford, a climb to the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and museums.
    • Student International Travel
Junior and Senior students attend IB World Student Conferences. Universities in cooperation with the International Baccalaureate Organization® provide a one week conference for IB students from across the globe. Groups of twenty students comprise a Global Action Team (GAT). Students study a topic of global significance about which the hosting university has particular expertise and distinguished faculty. Topics are as varied as the ethical distribution of food to developing games for outcomes benefiting the common good. In response to the study, each GAT develops a project to be completed during the school year in cooperation with the other students from around the world.
 
Flex Fridays provide Upper School students opportunities for community service and cultural explorations of the Dallas Ft. Worth area. Freshmen and sophomore students volunteer at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. A favorite of students and faculty is working at the North Texas Food Bank. 
 
Whether traveling internationally or locally, Alcuin’s program of Education Travel intentionally links specific IB learner outcomes, curriculum content, and student reflection to achieve academic excellence.
