Alcuin's work to strengthen our educational program is ongoing and intentional, deepening learning experiences, investing in faculty expertise, and building systems that support every student's growth and belonging.

The initiatives outlined below represent work that has been underway and continues to evolve: some are now in place strengthening daily student experience, others are actively being developed, and still others represent next steps built on current foundations. Together, they reflect Alcuin's commitment to excellence across the Montessori and IB continuum.

Strengthening Foundations: Early Childhood & Elementary

  • Early Literacy and Learning Support

    • Implemented a common literacy assessment framework across Primary and Elementary, establishing shared expectations and a clearer developmental picture of early reading growth
    • Extended DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) from Primary through Lower Elementary, allowing for earlier identification of needs and more precise instructional response
    • Invested in library program capacity through addition of Library Assistant and IB professional development for librarian, strengthening literacy support and access to high-quality materials
    • Piloted the Reading Lab for students in Primary and Lower Elementary who benefit from targeted, evidence-based literacy intervention
    • Invested in professional learning for Lower Elementary Teaching Assistants and faculty, including dyslexia-informed practices and early literacy development
    • Preparing to implement research-based writing program in Lower Elementary, building on literacy assessment and intervention work to support comprehensive language development
  • Montessori Assessment and Instructional Clarity

    • Reimplemented Montessori-aligned individual math benchmark tracking in Lower Elementary to strengthen progress monitoring and instructional decision-making
    • Launched standardized benchmark assessments in math, geometry, and language in Upper Elementary at the start of the school year, establishing clear baselines to guide individualized learning
    • Continuing to refine assessment practices as tools for clarity and partnership, supporting more meaningful communication with families about student progress
  • Program Growth and Continuity

    • Expanded outdoor and experiential learning through the Roots and Wings Program in Primary, intentionally connecting young learners to nature, curiosity, and care for the environment
    • Adding staffing and program capacity in Elementary to support continuity, enrollment growth, and long-term program stability
    • Created intentional opportunities for connection across divisions through family gatherings, classroom-based community events, cultural celebrations, and shared learning experiences

Advancing the Montessori–IB Continuum

  • Creating Seamless Educational Progression

    • Engaged Upper Elementary, Middle School, and Upper School faculty in ongoing subject-specific vertical and horizontal curricular alignment, ensuring learning is coherent, cumulative, and developmentally appropriate across grade levels
    • Updated unit plans to meet International Baccalaureate (IB) requirements and reflect current best practices
    • Continuing to strengthen Digital Citizenship education, reinforcing that the values of kindness, respect, and responsibility practiced at Alcuin extend to online spaces
    • Strengthened horizontal collaboration within grade levels, aligning expectations and instructional approaches across classrooms
    • Completed refreshed IB professional development for faculty, reinforcing shared language, pedagogy, and expectations across divisions
  • Inquiry, Design, and Character

    • Introduced double instructional periods in Individuals & Societies and Science, allowing for sustained inquiry, deeper laboratory work, and more meaningful project-based learning
    • Established Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) requirement for each MYP year level (grades 6–10), strengthening connections across subject areas and preparing students for integrated, inquiry-based learning
    • Expanded Middle School Advisory programming with intentional focus on IB Learner Profile attributes, supporting character development alongside academic growth
    • Launched MS Matters, a monthly Middle School family newsletter, strengthening predictable and transparent home–school communication
    • Increased staffing and instructional capacity in Robotics and Design, supporting hands-on, applied, and interdisciplinary learning
  • Independence, Service, and Rigor

    • Completed MYP subject overviews and advancing Diploma Programme documentation, while engaging stakeholders in comprehensive review of Assessment, Academic Integrity, Language, Inclusion, and Admissions policies in preparation for IB programme evaluation
    • Established systematic IB professional development timeline ensuring all faculty complete subject-specific training and Interdisciplinary Unit/Approaches to Learning certification by August 2026
    • Advanced interdisciplinary planning and alignment with IB expectations, ensuring students are prepared for the rigor and independence required in advanced coursework
    • Strengthened service-learning pathways and preparation for Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), increasing student responsibility and leadership beginning in grades 9 and 10
    • Established tiered service recognition awards to acknowledge student commitment and community impact
  • Athletics Achievement & Development

    • Notable increase in collegiate interest and communication regarding Alcuin student-athletes
    • Continued alignment of the athletics program with IB philosophy, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, well-being, and character development
    • Strengthened coaching alignment and program consistency across teams
    • Launched comprehensive athletics communications strategy including promotional video, expanded social media presence, and redesigned team uniforms for volleyball and basketball
    • Piloting team media days with basketball program in spring 2026, expanding to full athletics roster for enhanced college recruiting visibility and program promotion in 2026–27
    • Established annual athletic banquet tradition to formally recognize student-athlete achievement and program growth
    • Strengthened IB alignment within Physical Education curriculum, ensuring program philosophy extends to required PE coursework
    • Planned competitive transitions, including a new athletic district, to provide appropriate challenge and growth opportunities
    • Added offerings such as off-season Middle School soccer, supporting skill development and student engagement

Investing in the Future: People, Campus, and Systems

    • Adding a Literacy Specialist for our Primary and Elementary programs, providing targeted intervention support.
    • Continued elevating professional development in Montessori pedagogy and IB practices, recognizing that exceptional teaching requires sustained learning
    • Increased professional development budget by 20% annually over two years, supporting sustained faculty and staff learning in Montessori pedagogy, IB practices, instructional innovation, and equity and belonging
    • Conducting comprehensive compensation study to benchmark salaries and benefits against peer institutions, ensuring Alcuin remains competitive in recruiting and retaining exceptional faculty and staff
    • Implemented tiered retirement matching system aligned with peer independent schools, providing long-term financial security and strengthening benefits competitiveness
    • Providing $2.6 million in Financial Assistance, ensuring access and affordability for families across all divisions
  • Leadership and Institutional Growth

    • Establishing Director of Community and Belonging position to lead and elevate systematic equity and inclusion work across faculty, staff, administration, board, student, and family communities
    • Adding Associate Director of Technology to expand instructional technology integration, faculty support for digital pedagogy, and infrastructure planning for future-ready learning environments
    • Expanded Alcuin Summer from six to eight weeks in response to increased enrollment and family need, broadening access to extended learning opportunities and year-round support for the Alcuin community
  • Strategic Partnerships

    • Partnered with Dr. Valaida Wise and her team to conduct comprehensive Inclusion and Belonging Audit, assessing current systems, identifying growth opportunities, and guiding professional learning for students, educators, and leaders across the community
    • Engaged Mission & Data to conduct comprehensive Educational Technology Audit examining digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, data protection, device management systems, and online safety protocols to ensure secure, effective learning environments
    • Partnered with Mission Minded defining Alcuin's educational distinctiveness and articulate the enduring value of the Montessori-IB continuum, supporting enrollment growth, personnel recruitment, and institutional sustainability
    • Initiating comprehensive facilities audit evaluating campus infrastructure, building conditions, and space allocation to inform capital planning and ensure physical environments continue to support program growth and educational excellence
  • Campus and Infrastructure

    • Exploring meal service options that strengthen community dining experiences, support student learning about nutrition and sustainability, and provide convenient, healthy choices for students and families
    • Completed major facilities improvements including gym and library roof replacement, gym floor installation, concrete structural repairs, and north-south hallway renovation, ensuring safe and functional learning spaces
    • Expanded comprehensive security infrastructure through additional camera systems, extended coverage hours (7 a.m.–8 p.m. daily plus weekend event support), neighborhood security network collaboration, and dedicated traffic management for student arrival and dismissal
    • Advanced campus and security improvements informed by technology audit findings, ensuring physical and digital systems evolve to meet student needs in a rapidly changing landscape
    • Advancing planned facilities improvements including Galbraith building re-roofing and preventive maintenance, interior space enhancements, outdoor learning area upgrades, and acoustics improvements in shared environments
